This applet helps you solve and understand Sudoku problems. To complete it successfully, the numbers 1 through 9 must appear exactly once on every row, on every column, and in every 3x3 box. Try a sample problem from the Daily Sudoku site.
Click on a square and enter a number (you can navigate using the arrow keys, too). The small gray numbers in each square show what values can legally be entered in that square. So when the grid is empty, any number can go in any square. As you type a number the small gray numbers in the related boxes adjust to acknowledge the number you've just entered. If you type an "8" into the upper left corner, you can no longer enter an 8 into the first row, the first column, or the top left 3x3 box. The background colors in the grid also change to reflect this. The remaining legal places to put an 8 are given a pink background color. This helps you spot places to put your next number.
Sometimes you don't have enough information to fill in any more squares; you have to make a guess. Before you guess, memorize the board location by pressing the letter M and your current board position will be memorized. If you discover your first guess was wrong, recall the previous board position by pressing the letter R.
