Despite my brother's best efforts over the years to get me hooked on The New Republic, I never have been much of a reader of political op-ed pieces. This political apathy of mine was, I suppose, just one of the many things that changed during our late and infamous day of changing.

The inescapable crush of current events has left me spellbound, reading one essay after another. Weblogs have played a prominent role in my navigation from opinion to opinion. I will, for instance, refer you to Matt Welch's War Blog. He offers excellent meta-commentary on the current situation, pointing you to authors who are by turns infuriating and inspirational. It all depends on your point of view, but mine aligns closely with his, and so I read his blog carefully, following many side links. Highly recommended. When you're done here, go read it. Because of Matt Welch, for instance, I found a nice compact piece by G. Beato at soundbitten.com about the inherent creepiness of dealing with people who really have no interest in negotiating.

I find it fascinating to see what people have to say when the proverbial chips are down. I find it fascinating to watch really smart articulate writers beating the shit out of each other about something that really matters. I read Noam Chomsky and I think to myself, this guy is just insane. So it's intensely satisfying to see clever people like Christopher Hitchens slice him into ribbons.

As for The New Republic itself, I'm hip to it now. Check out the goods: Girl Power (Do fundamentalists fear women?). Also, I enjoy the Idiocy Watch column. This kind of thing is a tonic in trying times.
