"Alchemy, schmalchemy," friends of Paracelsus have been known to remark. "What's to get excited about? Show me a way to make gold, and then I'll get excited." It saddens to know that some people require such a crass display to be convinced of the value of the great art. Nevertheless, as Damiana, good friend of Paracelsus and occasional StarChamber contributor, has remarked: "Making gold turns out not to be so hard. You just have to really want it."

In the spirit of enlightenment, herewith is an example of practical alchemy in action. Recently, Paracelsus, zaP, and the Minister of Central Dogma were enjoying some well-deserved refreshments after a long day in the StarChamber editorial offices. They were drinking, respectively, a Tanqueray martini (of course), a glass of Faustino Rioja red wine, and a pint of Bass.

Observe the geometry. In a Eureka moment of his own, Paracelsus was practically bowled over by the alchemical algebra before his eyes. The conical form of the noble martini glass, the spherical wine glass, and the sturdy cylindrical pint glass had the fingerprints of Archimedes all over them.

Archimedes, of his many contributions to physics, engineering, and mathematics, was most proud of the following relation: given a cone, a sphere, and a cylinder of equal radius and height, the volume of the cone added to the volume of the sphere exactly equals the volume of the cylinder.

Or in this case, the liquid logic suggests that one can equate the clear gin and the red wine to the golden beer. Alchemy is everywhere, if you keep your eyes open. Archimedes would have been proud. What Mr. Saturday would make of it is anybody's guess.
